You qualify if you…
- Be at least 18 (intrastate California only) or 21 (interstate / hazmat).
- Hold a valid California driver's license.
- Provide proof of California residency and U.S. lawful presence.
- Pass a DOT medical exam and hold a current Medical Examiner's Certificate.
- Complete federally required Entry-Level Driver Training (ELDT) before the skills test.
- Pass the DMV written knowledge tests for your class and endorsements.
- Pass the CDL skills test: pre-trip inspection, basic control, and on-road driving.
- Be able to read and speak English well enough to communicate with the public and respond to road signs.
Common disqualifiers
- Recent DUI or alcohol violation in any vehicle.
- Leaving the scene of an accident in a commercial vehicle.
- Felony involving the use of a motor vehicle.
- Driving a commercial vehicle while CDL is suspended or revoked.
- Certain serious or repeated traffic offenses (review with admissions).
